This school year our kindergarteners, 3rd graders, and some small groups K-5 have had the riveting opportunity to explore the glories of gardening. In early September we prepared the soil. Following our preparation we began to plant the garden in October with the help of Leah at the community garden, and her amazing staff. Since October, we have tended to the plants, and have learned about the different aspects of correctly caring for our garden space. Just recently in January we did our first harvest of broccoli. Fun fact we learned from Leah — broccoli continues to grow if you gently harvest the main head of lettuce and continue to tend to the baby broccoli growing along the bottom side of the harvested area. After harvesting, the kindergarten class, teachers and Leah prepared a delicious broccoli, potato, and leek soup. All of the kindergartens tried their soup too! Exciting! We look forward to continuing to learn and grow with the garden space full of native plants, delicious vegetables, and various fruits and flowers. Siokwil to the community garden, Leah, school maintenance, administration, staff that tend to the garden and the builders of the garden space.
